TREATMENT APPROACH

The Highlands Group is a leader in Alcohol, Substance Abuse, Trauma and Process Addiction Treatment.

Highlands Recovery offers thoughtful and effective treatment for a host of addictions.

Couched in a two-prong model, Highlands Recovery couples the Twelve Step approach with a therapeutic programme that is tailor-made to each individual’s needs.

When first arriving each person will enter our Treatment Phase where they spend their full days at Highlands taking part in our full complement of groups including:

  • DBT
  • Interpersonal Groups
  • Art Therapy
  • Mindfulness
  • Exercise
  • Process Groups
  • individual therapy sessions.

They are also assigned their own counselor who will walk their journey through recovery with them. During this time the counselor will tailor the programme to steadily introduce more independence and time off the grounds balanced with relevant groups and one-on-one time.

Once the individual has reached a level of prolonged stability they will move onto the Sober Living stage of our programme in which they will still have the safety and holding of the Highlands Recovery environment while being able to leave the premises each day to attend to work, or other, commitments.

In this way, our treatment programme works on the underlying emotional conflicts and possible complex trauma while providing the structure and network of a Twelve Step programme that bodes so well for long-term recovery.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT WORKSHOPS

At Highlands Recovery we are acutely aware of the importance of educating the family as well as the client. The effect of a friend/family members addiction and or mental health issues can be devastating. Everyone in the system adopts different coping mechanisms and roles in an effort to make sense of their reality. Sadly the more they try, the more confused and desperate they become mostly because this condition is not rational.

Decisions and behaviour are based on fear and history. The fact is that often when family members do and say things they believe to be right in order to help, it has a different outcome to what they expect. This is a constant source of conflict in all spheres of the family’s life, physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and financially. We have found that once significant others have some insight and skills they feel empowered to manage the conflict effectively by responding as opposed to reacting.

WE WANT TO HELP

We want to help, not only significant others of those in treatment at Highlands Recovery, but also the community as a whole. As they say “it takes a village to raise a child” and it takes a community to help the casualties of this condition. So our invitation goes out to anyone who is impacted by or needs education and skills in this area. The group will be run by a qualified Highlands Recovery Counsellor and you will leave armed with some great information.
